On May 4, 2020, the National Center hosted a webinar for our PSN program on the topic of domestic violence issues and concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The risk of domestic violence has increased significantly as a direct result of COVID-19. Consequences include isolation, limited court access, changes in law enforcement procedures, less access to services and resources such as protection orders and shelter, and other serious concerns affecting the safety and well-being of communities across the country. This webinar featured Ashleigh Washington, Senior Director of Learning and Staff Development at Safe Horizon, who provided in-depth information on this issue. This includes outlining what this issue has meant for service providers and law enforcement nationwide, detailing viable solutions for those at the federal level to reach out and connect with state and local service providers, noting successful strategies Safe Horizon and other service providers have implemented to combat this issue, and providing recommendations for law enforcement responses through strategies aimed at innovative methods for court access, shelter, safety plans, increased use of technology, and more.
Stay tuned for future resource announcements!
